The Listening Ear Recommends
The Listening Ear Recommends is my way of sharing podcast episodes, and other audio content. That have helped me gain a better understanding of the influence of my lived experience. These episodes contain insight into different techniques that can be used to increase self-belief and regulate anxiety in tough moments.
podcast episode
What I loved/learnt?
The guest in this episode talks openly about their experience completing the best possible self practice. And their personal story that lead them to choose to try it.
I found their experience very relate able. And to hear that they found it a useful way to write down their goals. As it changed them from an abstract wish into something that they could see how to move towards. It’s a practice I want to try for myself. I have a long list of abstract goals I’d like to achieve. And it can feel overwhelming to acknowledge that I don’t actually know how to move closer to them becoming a reality.
Why/who should listen?
Do you want something to kickstart your journey to become who you really want to be?
This podcast episode explores how optimism and hope can be used to bring us closer to realising our best possible, future, selves.
The guest of the episode discusses their experience of completing the best possible self practice. And how it helped them to see that the gap between where they were presently and where they want to be. Was smaller than they thought.
The episode also touches on the ways optimistic thinking improves moods and regulates emotions.

What I loved/learnt?
This episode goes really well with another podcast episode I have recommended, from the same host. Both of the episodes discuss rituals. The other episode discusses how rituals can help us to recover from an unexpected change in life. Whereas this episode discusses how rituals can be used to help us feel confident when facing into uncertainty.
The difference between the two types of ritual is that this second kind. The one to give confidence facing into uncertainty. Needs to have a personal history that have meaning and significance. Strong enough that the person completely the ritual will believe it will work.
Why/who should listen?
Do you want to learn about a technique to help regulate anxiety in tough moments?
This episode discusses a technique athletes and astronauts use to help them overcome fear and uncertainty.
The focus of this episode are rituals. Unlike the previous rituals episode I recommended from this podcast host. The discussion this time is on how they can be used to give a confidence boost when we need it the most.

What I loved/learnt?
I enjoy listening to the come up stories of famous people. Particularly people from minority ethnic backgrounds. I find there is always an element of relatability to the specific time of cultural challenges they faced growing up. And generally experiencing a world that wants to predetermine their behaviour based on their “other” status.
This is a good listen for anyone. And an inspirational listen for someone who feels as if the qualities they value most are too often overlooked when assessing a persons level of success.
Why/who should listen?
Do you find yourself feeling bad because you are not succeeding in life in the exact same way as everyone else?
This podcast discusses how Kelly Marie Tran has been able to free themselves from doing what’s expected.
In the episode Kelly discusses how a childhood experience with their father, influenced them later in life. To prioritise behaving in ways that felt right to them, rather than behaving in ways that are seen to be in keeping with the status quo. And how they want to be recognised for their actions that reflect their values and beliefs. More than their associations with big businesses.
